Are you in one of these categories? You may be at risk for Varicose Veins!

Spider veins and varicose veins are problems we specialize in. Patients visit us to obtain effective treatment for twisted, swollen veins that cause not only discoloration on the skin, but also discomfort. The reason that varicose veins develop is because the valves in certain areas along the vein have become weak. In this state, the valves do not adequately return blood back toward the heart. As a result, it pools, causing the appearance we know as the varicose vein.
Varicose veins could sprout up due to a number of factors. Family history of this condition is a major indicator of risk. Additionally, there are four unique categories of people in whom we tend to see a greater instance of this problem.
The United States Department of Health and Human Resources released statistics that more than half of the Over-50 population in our country has varicose veins. This suggests an increased risk for the condition as we age.
Too much weight on the body’s natural frame causes stress on venous activity. Higher body fat and lower muscle mass exacerbates this stress, because veins are not adequately supported from the outside-in. Over time, the additional pressure from weight can wear down the walls of a vein, or several, leading to problematic varicose veins.
During pregnancy, the inferior vena cava, which extends down the right side of the body, is under additional pressure from the growing fetus. Ultimately, this can cause new varicose veins to develop, or existing veins to worsen. The presence of veins during pregnancy does not indicate risk to mother or unborn child. Also, this is a modifiable factor that may be positively affected by walking, maintaining a healthy weight, and elevating the legs when possible.
People who Work on their Feet
As detrimental as it is for us to sit for long periods, we also can sustain damage to the lower extremities if we stand for too long. This puts people who work on their feet at a unique risk for varicose veins. It is not standing, specifically, but standing without moving much. When we stand without movement to circulate blood from the feet and legs, it may accumulate in weakened veins.
