Tips for Getting More Movement into your Day

Most of us know that our body does better in general when we move more. At the same time, life is so busy for many of us that we move far less than we should. To be an average American today means to get up early and drive to a job where several hours are spent sitting at a desk. After work and the drive home, we are so exhausted that all we want to do is order pizza and sit on the sofa for just a little while. Clearly, this lifestyle has a downside. Our lack of movement puts us at risk for spider and varicose veins, as well as a variety of chronic health conditions. Here, we will touch on some common ways to get more movement into each day.
- Go to the source. Technology can make our workday easier, but it can also stand in the way of face-to-face interaction. Instead of sending the email, walk to the relevant office in your building to obtain the information you need. Not only does this get you up and out of your seat for a few minutes, it can also improve your work relationships.
- Stand up and squat. Do you have a private office where you can do a few squats now than then? Do it! There is no need to get pumped up and sweaty; the idea is to get blood circulating through the lower extremities to prevent buildup.
- Take the take-out outside. When the day is busy, there may be a temptation to eat lunch at your desk. Instead, take your take-out to the nearest park or inviting area outside of your workplace. In addition to getting a little extra movement, you’ll also get a nice dose of vitamin D.
- Double-up. We all know that we should drink more water each day. To make sure this is accomplished, you can set an alarm to remind you to get up and refill your water every hour or so. The couple of minutes it takes to walk to the lunchroom or water cooler will add up in terms of health benefits.
