Research has indicated time and time again that the genes we inherit from our parents may be a large factor in why we get varicose veins (and spider veins, too). If even one of your parents has insufficient circulation through their veins, you may, as well. Let’s not worry unnecessarily though. Remember, you can’t control your genetics. You can work against them, though. When it comes to vein health, the more you move, the better. Also, if you love to walk or run long distances, consider wearing compression socks to support blood flow up from the feet and legs.

Your 9-to-5

You may love going to work every day, but what you do on a daily basis could be creating hidden danger for your veins. Studies have shown that people who sit at a desk all day long are more likely to develop vein problems like spider veins and varicose veins. Standing all day, as well, has the same detrimental effect on veins in the legs. Ideally, your job will allow you to alternate your position from standing to sitting more often than not. You may have to get creative, but the results will be worth it.

Your Jimmy Choo Shoes

We aren’t going to single out poor Jimmy Choo; any high-heeled shoes could put a person at risk for varicose veins. This is because of the position of the foot and ankle, when wearing high-heels, inhibits adequate blood flow through the lower extremities. For blood to return to the heart, the blood vessels – and their valves – work harder. Must you give up your favorite pumps? No. Just switch from high to low, or flat, on a regular basis.
