Surprise! You could get Spider Veins in some Unexpected Places!

facial spider veins | columbia scSpider veins are the frustrating, tiny clusters of purple, red, and blue veins that we usually see on the thighs or legs. Usually, the small vessels just beneath the skin are not visible. In some people, though, these veins expand just enough to show obvious signs. While there are no health consequences to spider veins, they can present quite the aesthetic problem. This can be especially true when these problem veins show up in unexpected places.

Surprising areas in which spider veins could develop include:

  • Your face. When spider veins develop on the face, it is usually on the cheeks, under the eyes, or around the nose. Sometimes, the underlying reason for facial spider veins is a dermatologic condition such as eczema or rosacea. The veins may become more prominent due to sun exposure, as well, or due to smoking.
  • Your feet. Developing spider veins in your feet could, at some point, become more than a cosmetic concern. Sometimes, spider veins are a prelude to varicose veins, which can become large and twisted. If varicose veins develop, they may be accompanied by common symptoms including aching pain, cramps, and swelling.
  • Your hands. We usually associate hand veins with age. This is typically related to the natural loss of fatty tissue around the small bones on the backs of the hands. To make matters worse, the skin also becomes thinner with age, which further exacerbates the appearance of veins that run just beneath the surface.

We often think of medical treatments for veins in the legs. However, there are viable treatment options for veins in surprising places, as well. Sclerotherapy is one of the most longstanding therapies for spider veins. At The Vein Clinic, our friendly team strives to make every treatment comfortable and successful. Within 4 to 6 weeks after sclerotherapy, most patients enjoy a noticeable difference in the appearance of their skin.
